This recipe is an authentic Indian naan recipe and makes 8.
|Cake flour||4 cups|
|Baking powder||1 teaspoon|
|Baking soda||1/2 teaspoon|
|Egg||1 whole egg|
|Plain yogurt||2 tablespoons|
|Vegetable oil||2 tablespoons|
|Kalonji/ nigella (onion seeds)||2 teaspoons|
How we go about it:
- Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together in a large bowl. Add the sugar, egg, milk, yogurt and 3 tablespoons of water, and knead for about 10 minutes to make a medium-soft dough. Rub the dough with a little oil and cover with a damp cloth. Leave to prove for about an hour in a warm place.
- Preheat the oven to 200 Celsius.
- Divide the dough into 8 portions and shape into bowls. Apply a little oil to each ball and sprinkle the kalonji on top. Flatten each ball into a 15cm round. Stretch the dough on one side to make a triangular shape. Place the naans on a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until crisp and brown on both sides.
- Serve hot, topped with butter.
